A Little Thunder

It always amazes me how God can put something before us just when we need it most. How He can use us and our pains, sicknesses, grief...for His good and to the benefit of others.

I'm not a huge social media person...ok, more than some, but I'm not an all day every day poster. I do like to read about local happenings and keep up with friends that I don't get to see all the time. I maintain a business page to connect with my customers.

Not so long ago a local news post crossed my personal Facebook radar. At any other time, in any other circumstance I'm sure it would have just slipped on past. But on this day I clicked, I read, I cried. I was touched. Touched deeply because the story was so similar to my own, so fresh the remembrance.

This story was about a local Missouri family who, after a series of infant losses, carrying their last son to almost 21 weeks, founded an organization called A Little Thunder to support other families who have lost children to miscarriage, late-term loss, and early infancy loss. For these families they are creating care packages, just little comforts to know that others are there who understand and that the memory of their son Isaac may live on.

I knew immediately that I needed to get involved somehow, that God put this before me for a reason. I think it is part healing, but also for helping others (moving past my own selfish grief). Upon reading their web page I saw that they have wish list of items for the Comfort Boxes. With a little more internet clicking I found their Facebook page and saw that they are holding an auction at the end of this month.

I made contact with Pam and felt an instant connection (amazing again how God connects people through circumstances) and after talking with her and lifting up some prayers I donated a basket of goodies and a gift certificate to their auction. For more details on the auction, how to bid on items such as the gift basket below, or how you can get involved visit A Little Thunder on the web or on their Facebook page.

Somehow this little contribution doesn't quiet seem like enough and I will be sending handmade lip balms and small guest soaps for the Comfort Boxes.

If you would like to help me contribute a few more you may purchase a Kit from Life Soap Simple that includes 3 lip balms, 3 soap bars, or a combo pack containing one of each. The entire amount of purchase will be used to make and send items to A Little Thunder Comfort Boxes.

Homemade Valentine's Day

I don't know about you but I hate sending store bought Valentine's to school each year. I like to help my kids make something special, but have also discovered that boys don't really enjoy making 20+ heart shaped Valentine, love, mushy, sweet cards. We need a project that is boy and simple (meaning they don't have to do much other than sign their name), but still unique and fun.

This year I found two fun and easy templates via Pinterest to adapt for their personalities. What I like about these two projects is that they aren't super mushy, we got to customize them (I love FREE printables), and the only thing the boys really had to do was sign their name (and fill some goody bags)....100% boy approved Valentine's!

The first is for my oldest, a 4th grader, Pirate Valentine's.

We added the text with photoshop, stitched on some tiny heart eye patches, and I thought distressing the corners with a little candle flame would be fun (who said mom's can't play with fire). He signed his name, put some pirate themed goodies in a bag and we affixed it to the back of the card...handmade and unique.

For my 1st grader we needed something a little different and simpler. I love this spy glass project (again with free printables) from dandee designs.

We simply printed the PDF, punched our holes, and he even did all the tying himself. We made goody bags with plastic bugs to examine under the magnifying glass and other Valentine's treats. So BOY!

These took a little more time than store bought cards, but I really like how these turned out and we had some good bonding time putting it all together (and wow! a couple weeks in advance!)

Are you looking for handmade ways to show your love? Share what projects you've been working on.

Paint, Prayer and Possibilities

We've been forced to face a circumstance I never imagined we would every have to go through, and sometimes it feels like all hope is gone. My heart aches. But in the hurt and frustration, we are slowly finding ways to recuperate.

It's been 4 weeks now. 4 weeks since we lost our little boy. John, delivered at 15 weeks, delivered to us without life. John, whose little flutters had not escaped me in the week before...only the day before we expected to hear your heartbeat for the first time. John, so unbelievably small and already taking up so much of my heart.

We've been grieving so deeply these past weeks, it's just now that I can pen this. Tears have flown freely while this body has healed. And still I feel the loss like it was yesterday and wonder at times when I'll be able to move forward...not forgetting, but living though a part of me is gone.

This week I took up a paint brush, a real brush with a real canvas, for the first time in years. And there is release in the flow of the paint, the swirl of color, and the way the light comes back to me. Light from within and I lighten somehow the load.

There have been prayers, prayers a plenty. Pleading and mournful and even thankful. Now I am here with my waking, daily prayer: LORD, on this day grant me the strength to make it through this day, this day alone. Grant me comfort when I just can't do it and if it is Your will, please show me how You are using this to make me better for You. Thank You for the many blessings You give to me in the here and now. I'll not worry of what is past nor what is to come. Thank you for loving me. Amen.

‘"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the Lord, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10 (NIV)

And I see possibility as I pull my self back into reality, this broken me into a whole. I'm a mommy to three beautiful babes though one be an angel. I'm a wife to an amazing man. I am creative and I can move forward and still remember, and I can paint, and I can pray. Possibility.

And I try to remember to...
"... praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14a (NIV)
