Rolling with the Storm

I’m one of those people who loves thunderstorms. I love the smell of rain coming…hanging heavy. I love to stand and watch as the clouds roll in, trees swaying to the impending, the lightning strike behind the old walnut tree…illuminating it in darkness, the beat of rain hard against windows, thunder rolling in long peal.

When you have young children you also have to teach a little bit of fear and safety (don’t play outside in a storm), but not fright to point of wakeful nights and terrified screaming. I don’t remember either of the boys being scared of storms, yet they always have this concern when things start looking nasty. I always remind them that we need storms and rain.

I like to think of thunder as God reminding us that HE is up there…out there…always with us. He has to talk in a big voice because sometimes we are so caught up in ourselves and our world we forget to listen in the quiet still moments. So He booms out in His big way and we snap to attention…somewhat fearful but knowing that he is raining his love down on us.

So I will not be afraid of the storm but be grateful that He sent me this day and that He is watching out over me. And more often than not He has to thunder down to remind me to look up at Him and look to Him even in the quiet still moments, not just when I’m in a thunderstorm.

Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty! Ps 93:4
